Current efficiency rates are alarmingly low: even well-managed nitrogen fertilizers achieve only 60–70% efficiency, with most falling below 50%. Recent disruptions from the pandemic and geopolitical tensions have exposed critical vulnerabilities in our centralized, fossil fuel-dependent fertilizer production systems.
