Critical Elements in Florida Phosphate: Resource Potential and Advances in Recovery Technologies

This presentation highlights phosphate as an unconventional source of rare earth elements (REEs), and summarizes key extraction technologies developed recently. REEs are essential for clean energy, AI and computing technologies, and defense applications. Florida phosphate mining and processing byproducts—including phosphatic clay, flotation tailings, phosphogypsum, and phosphoric acid—contain enough REEs to meet U.S. demand. Supported by the U.S. DOE’s Critical Materials Innovation Hub, FIPR has developed technically feasible recovery methods for these resources.
